AMERICAN RED CROSS RULES

FULL LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION 

This is an American Red Cross Full-Certification for Lifeguarding which will allow participants to work at indoor and outdoor pools. This is not a waterfront class. Minimum age requirement-15. Participants will learn the skills of Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED over the course of 2-in-person days and at-home virtual session (blended learning) and is comprised of several steps:

STEP ONE: THE PRE-TEST-Register HERE or email allison@wmaymca.org if you cannot make the days listed online

  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl and breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs. 
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping your face at or near the surface so your are able to get a breath.
  • You should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. 

STEP TWO: Once you pass the Lifeguard Pretest

  • Blended Learning online training – you will be sent a link for an online training must be completed prior class

STEP THREE:

  • 2-day in-person class to review and assess skills and rescues, followed by written exam.

IMMEDIATE LIFEGUARD POSITIONS AVAILABLE UPON COMPLETION OF CERTIFICATION.

LIFEGUARD & WATERFRONT RECERTIFICATION

Current certified lifeguards with a valid certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED or those who have not expired by more than 30 days. When registering for a recertification course, select Lifeguard or Waterfront. Minimum age requirement-15. Participants will relearn the skills of Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED over the course of a 1-day in person session and at-home virtual session (blended learning). Must complete Lifeguard Pretest.

WATERFRONT LIFEGUARD COURSE

  • Swim 550 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl and breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. You should place your hands under your armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping your face at or near the surface so your are able to get a breath.
  • You should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. 
  • Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the skill sequence.

  • 2-day in-person class to review and assess skills and rescues, followed by written exam.

Waterfront Lifeguard Course Fees

CPR/AED FOR THE PROFESSIONAL RESCUER WITH FIRST AID

We offer CPR/AED and First Aid Training for members, community members and employees. Minimum age requirement-15

Once you are registered, you will recieve an email to the online links to complete prior to your class. There are 2 online links that must be completed. Proof MUST be submitted prior to the in-person classroom learning. If a participant does not submit proof they will not be permitted to stay for the in-person portion and will not receive their certification.
